Confused after his shot was judged not to have crossed the line, CR7 had a good look of the match official’s watch for confirmation.
Referee Daniele Orsato insists Cristiano Ronaldo did “nothing strange” by checking his watch during the previous match between Juventus and AS Roma.
Ronaldo was on target when Juventus ran out 2-0 winners against Roma in their Serie A clash at the Allianz Stadium in February.
The Portuguese forward thought he had hit a first-half brace when one of his shots rattled the crossbar and bounced on the goal line, and couldn’t believe when his shot was judged to have not crossed the line.
CR7 jokingly then asked the referee to check his watch to make sure about the decision, with Orsato then showing him his watch and turning away smiling.
“There wasn’t a lack of respect. He asked me if the ball crossed the line,” Orsato said recalling the incident, on Rai2, via Football Italia.
“He asked me how the system is working. There was nothing strange. He only wanted to know how the watch works.
“The relationship between referees, players and coaches has improved. It’s right to have dialogue, but a referee must always be strict.”
