The referee in charge of the Brazil-Argentina Semifinal match at the Copa America said the Selecao was simply the best and that’s why they won.
Brazil defeated Argentina in the 2019 Copa America Semifinal 2-0 thanks to goals by Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino.
But after the match, Albiceleste superstar Lionel Messi said the referee was wrong on certain calls, and that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was useless.
And today, referee Roddy Zambrano has come out and said how he knows Messi is a great footballer, but that his work was right during the whole match.
“Messi is a player who is dedicated to playing, I never had problems with him, I was surprised by his statements after the game, but everyone has their opinion,” Zambrano told Argentinean newspaper Olé.
“Everything ended well, Brazil was superior in the whole phase of the cup.”
“We knew that the loser was going to look for some culprit in this match, in this case, the referee,” he explained.
“I am very calm about my work. The president (Seneme, of the referees of the Conmebol) told me to stay calm because he was happy with my work.”
“We knew that the team that was losing was going to find a culprit, and those culprits were going to be us, “said Zambrano.
Also, Zambrano clarified that his wife is not Seneme’s secretary, nor does he work for FIFA. “Those things make you uncomfortable, there are people who read that and believe it’s true,” he said.
“My goal is to reach the World Cup in Qatar and for that, I work,” he said.
