Time to go down memory lane into one of the most dreadful years of Antoine Griezmann’s career, the 2016 nightmare for club and country.

French forward Antoine Griezmann shares this day with Ronaldinho Gaucho, he turns 28 years of age today and we decided to talk about the 2016 nightmare year that completely defines him as a footballer.

Don’t get us wrong, we congratulate Antoine Griezmann for his birthday and we always wish him the best but talking about how unlucky he has been at the biggest stage is completely inevitable.

Antoine Griezmann is one of the most successful players of the last decade, but he was unfortunate enough to exist in the Ronaldo/Messi era, which leaves him with very few opportunities to become the best player in the world despite his incredible skills as a striker.

Griezmann has already enjoyed a lot of success both at a club and international levels, but he still hasn’t been able to crack the podium within the conversation of the best players in football history.

And to be honest, we really don’t think that he will ever be considered amongst those all-time greats for several reasons.

In order to further explain why we think this occurs in Griezmann’s career, we will only talk about a single year of his career that perfectly sums up just how unfortunate the French forward is. We are obviously talking about 2016.

Champions League heartbreak.

The year was very hopeful for Antoine at the club level, he reached the 2016 Champions League final in Milano but Atletico Madrid was facing Real Madrid for the second time in the last three years.

Even if there was a lot of hope for the Colchoneros to finally win a trophy against their most hated rival, it was evident that all the responsibility would fall on Antoine Griezmann’s shoulders and he would have to respond accordingly when that moment came.

During the game against Los Blancos, the moment finally arrived when a penalty was called for Atletico Madrid and Griezmann stood in front of the goalkeeper to score his squad’s goal in the biggest stage possible.

The Frenchman failed miserably by sending his shot straight to the bar and taking the possibility of winning the match during the 90 minutes, the final result was a goalless draw and Griezmann saw Cristiano Ronaldo score the winning goal during a dramatic penalty shootout.

The name of the Portuguese player remained a constant throughout all of Antoine Griezmann’s 2016, Ronaldo became the stuff of nightmares for the French forward.

Griezmann’s infamous summer with France.

After this first major heartbreak with Atletico Madrid, Antoine Griezmann was hopeful that this dreadful moment could be forgotten during the 2016 European Championship that France was hosting.

This French National Team was filled with some of the best players in the world, they didn’t have Kylian Mbappe yet but Griezmann was at the top of his game and he really did offer an incredible performance throughout the whole tournament.

But Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal appeared in the final, both squads played a very competitive match in Paris and the hosts ended up losing during extra time thanks to an Eder winning-goal.

Griezmann was nowhere to be seen during the final, but he did get first row tickets to watch Cristiano Ronaldo lift the trophy right in front of him. And finally, Griezmann closed the year by losing the Ballon d’Or against CR7 in order to close one of the most forgettable years in Antoine Griezmann’s career.

Fortunately for him, life has given the player that revenge he was looking for after winning the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but he still has to get that major trophy at club level for Atletico Madrid.

Regardless of what you may think about Griezmann, he is still one of the best players in the world and we wish him a happy birthday.
