Arsenal have reportedly struck an £8m agreement with rivals Chelsea to sign wantaway defender David Luiz on a two-year deal.
Luiz’s alleged desire to complete a summer move to Arsenal comes as a big surprise considering he’d only signed a new two-year contract at Chelsea in May.
Reports first came to light on the Brazil international’s desire to quit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The fact that he even trained by himself instead of joining Frank Lampard’s squad only fueled the rumours.
While neither the player or club have given any reasons for this sudden u-turn, the BBC claims that Luiz will undergo a medical at Arsenal on Thursday ahead of a deadline day transfer.
Apparently, the 32-year-old has agreed on a contract until 2021 at the Emirates Stadium. He will serve as a direct replacement for captain Laurent Koscielny following the defender’s €5m move to French side Bordeaux.
Meanwhile, Shkodran Mustafi could reportedly join Koscielny in Ligue 1 with an unnamed club. While it remains uncertain whether it could be a permanent or loan switch, Arsenal boss Unai Emery will likely not allow it.
The Spaniard recently opened up on plans to sign a new centre-back ahead of Luiz’s impending arrival.
“If we can on the last day, we will try to sign another centre-back, but one who has the capacity to help us,” said Emery.
“We have a lot of defensive players. Maybe, it is different when Laurent Koscielny tells us he wanted to leave.
“We tried to sign some important, expensive players for our defence. But when we can’t do that, the second line players don’t really convince us to sign them.”
Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney could also be on the verge of finally completing his £25m move to Arsenal. However, the club are in a race against time to make the deal official with the English transfer window closing today at 18:00 (CET).
