Atletico Madrid ground out yet another draw after Celta Vigo came to the Wanda Metropolitano and took a point.

All the talk over the summer was of the formidable firepower at the disposal of Diego Simeone. But for the second time in a row in La Liga, they have failed to score.

This was supposed to be the season that saw Atletico Madrid break the stranglehold on Spanish football that has been enjoyed for so long by Barcelona and cross-town rivals Real Madrid.

After today’s draw with Celta Vigo, which follows a defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad, their season appears to be unraveling rather quickly.

Madrid’s midweek exploits in the Champions League, which saw Simeone’s men claw back a two-goal deficit to salvage a draw, appeared to have taken its toll.

Hector Herrera’s late-minute heroics against Juventus was rewarded with a starting spot. He played an attacking midfield role, behind Costa and Correa.

Simone went with an attack-minded 4-4-2 formation, with Felix and Koke playing down the wings.

But after 20 shots, only five of which were actually on target, Atletico could simply not break down a resolute Celta Vigo.

Celta’s keeper Ruben Blanco had an outstanding game, pulling off some crucial saves, to keep his team on level terms.

Blanco denied a close-range header from Felipe after his defenders failed to cut out Trippier’s cross. Then saving a pile driver shot from Lodi and then an effort from Joao Felix.

The second half saw him perform more heroics. Saving from Koke who shot from distance once again.

It was perhaps Atleticos lack of quality in the final third that was there undoing.

Simeone substituted Felix, Correa, and Herrera, in the second half, in an attempt to get that vital goal. Even the introduction of Alvaro Morrata failed to inspire.

Celta Vigo was unlucky to not snatch all three points at the death. When Pione Sisto failed to do better with a chance at Oblak’s back-post.

Final score Atletico Madrid 0 – Celta Vigo 0.

Next is a mid-week trip to Mallorca, before the Madrid derby for Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid.

Los Rojiblancos need to find scoring boots and quickly. The chasing pack will be looking to take advantage of today’s slipup.
