Barcelona Women’s team continued their scoring run by beating Atletico Madrid 6-1.
In the opening game of the season in the Women’s League championship in Spain, Barcelona Women’s team beat Tacon 9-1.
While it wasn’t nine, it could well have been. It did, however, end up a thrashing as Barca beat Atletico 6-1.
After dropping two points last Sunday, in a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano, Atletico was sitting top of the league above Barca at the start of proceedings.
Atletico has won the league the last three years, and with a 100% record so far this season, and two points clear of Barcelona.
It appeared that Atletico have started the season with the intention of making it a fourth championship.
Atletico drew first blood, taking a second-minute lead with a goal from Amanda Sampedro at the newly named Johan Cruyff Stadium.
It didn’t take long though for Barca to find their rhythm and get things back on level terms. An 8th-minute penalty which was converted by Jenni put the score at 1-1.
Mariona Caldentey gave the home side the lead in the 28th minute, to make it 2-1 before Lopez inadvertently put the ball in her own net to make 3-1 in the 34th.
It appeared Barca were set to run riot again, as, in stoppage time of the first half, they made it four. Oshoala coolly putting the ball in the back of the net.
4-1 to Barca at the half.
Barcelona and Oshoala started the second half as clinically as the ended the first. Just 2 minutes after the break, saw Oshoala get her second and Barca’s fifth of the night.
5-1 Barcelona lead in the 47th minute.
If things were not bad enough for Atletico, on the hour mark, Aissatou Tounkara picked up a second yellow card and therefore saw red.
Down to ten players, Madrid continued to battle and showed signs of resilience.
However, the 76th-minute strike from Silvia Meseguer compounded thier misery and made it 6-1 to the Catalonians.
Barcelona is a team on a mission to regain a crown they have not held since 2015.
Inspired by the brilliant Caroline Graham Hansen, they are apparently the team to beat.
