Jordi Alba is a new injury problem for Barcelona and manager Ernesto Valverde.

In a night that was supposed to be a celebration of the return of Lionel Messi from injury.

If two dropped points were not bad enough, things did not go to plan on the fitness front for either for Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona.

Jordi Alba left the field of play injured in Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

With only 40 minutes on the clock of the first half of this much-anticipated game, Barcelona’s apparent injury curse of the 2019/20 season struck again.

It appeared Alba, suffered some form of a hamstring injury, and fell to the ground clutching his left upper leg. The Spanish defender signaled to the bench for immediate attention.

Barcelona medical staff came on to give the player attention. Alba decided after a little treatment to try and continue. But it became clear very quickly that that was impossible and he was withdrawn.

Barcelona signed a long term replacement for the 30-year-old Alba this summer in Junior Firpo. But the Dominican Republic international is also currently sidelined by injury.

Ernesto Valverde had to do some shuffling around.

He brought on Sergi Roberto for Alba. But played Roberto at rightback and moved Portuguese defender Nelson Semedo into Alba’s left-back position.

Alba will undergo tests and a possible scan today to determine the severity of the injury and expected recovery time.

The European leagues are back in full swing now the international break has been played. Barcelona have five games in the next four weeks

Alba has been ever-present for Valverde. Last nights game was the first this season that he has not played in its entirety.

This season has seen Barca suffer almost curse like injuries. Messi, Suarez, Dembele, Umtiti and now Alba all either on or been on the list at some point this season.
