Barcelona’s midfielder Arda Turan was handed a suspended two-year eight-month prison sentence.
According to Goal.com, the 32-year-old player who is currently on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir was charged with sexual harassment, carrying unlicensed weapons, intentional wounding, and shooting with a gun.
The incident involved a Turkish singer Berkay Sahin and his wife.
The singer’s wife accused Turan of sexual assault, a charge for which he was acquitted.
The other charges relate to an alleged attack by Turan on Sahin that left the singer with a broken nose and in fear of his life. As the footballer fired the firearm at the floor in a public place.
He was found guilty of firing a gun to incite fear and panic, illegal possession of weapons and causing intentional injury.
The player is unlikely to face any custodial time, as the sentence was suspended for five years.
So provided he stays out of trouble he will only incur a fine from his employer.
Turkish club Basaksehir has since confirmed that they have fined the 32-year-old 2.5 million Turkish Lira for the incident.
Arda Turan released a sattement via social media.
“I did not commit this ‘verbal harassment’ crime which even bothers me to speak of it.”
“Nor is it possible.”
“The headline of this event is that I’m acquitted of the charges of harassment; not the penalties I received for errors I made due to these slanders thrown at me.”
Turan joined Barcelona from Atletico Madrid for 34 million Euros back in 2015. However, partway through the 2018/19 season, he was loaned out to Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir for two years.
His time in Turkey has not been great. As well as this incident, he also received a 16 game league ban for losing his temper with a referee.
