Bayern Munich comes from behind to salvage a draw against Hertha Berlin.
It was business as usual from Robert Lewandowski. He scored both the Bayern goals on the night.
But at the Allianz Arena, on the opening night of the Bundesliga season. It was not enough to start the season off with a home win and three points.
According to Fox Sports, while the 2-2 draw flattered the visitors Hertha Berlin. Bayern lacks that cutting edge.
Polish international Lewandowski put the defending champions into the lead after 24 minutes. It was assumed the Bavarian giants were picking right back up where they ha left off last season.
Only for the home crowd to be stunned in a period of two minutes of madness.
In the 36th minute, Hertha Berlin was on level terms with a goal fortuitous goal from Dodi Lukebakio.
Then only two minutes later Bayern found themselves trailing to a Marko Grujic goal.
The Serbian midfielder capitalised on some sloppy defending to punish Munich and give his side the lead.
The midfield first-half hero was undone by VAR in the second half. He committed a needless foul on Lewandowski which was picked up by the VAR system.
Lewandowski made no mistake by tucking away the penalty to bring parity to the score line.
Munich pressed and pressed for a winner. But were unable to find the back of the net.
Lewandowski had the chance to win it in stoppage time but failed to find the target with a header.
Bayern Munich started poorly last season but finished in style to claim the Bundesliga.
It remains to be seen f the Munich faithful will be as forgiving of Niko Kovac if results like this continue.
Bayern travel to Schalke on August 24th, Kovac will hope he has ll his new faces in place by then and his side hit their stride from then on.
Lewandowski has said recently he was concerned about his team chances given the lack of transfer activity on the attacking area of the field.
Now with the addition of Perisic, the apparently imminent arrival of Mandzukic and Countinho they may start to show that ruthless streak of old one again.
💬 Niko #Kovac: "The points are shared. Berlin had a little bit of luck. We were dominant and had the chances. The team tried for 90 minutes to win the game and I am proud of that."
