Scottish Champions Celtic crashed out of the UEFA Champions League.
In a report from Sky Sports, the details are quite astonishing, that a team of Celtics supposed quality serenaded the lead not once, but twice against the Cluj.
Cluj from Romania. Came to Celtic Park, having held the Hoops to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Romania.
With home-field advantage and an away goal. Celtic seemed to think this was a done deal.
Inside of the first half-hour, Cluj had scored a vital away goal. It was not until the second half that Celtic got back into the game.
Scoring twice in ten minutes to take the lead and apparent control of the tie. With 16 minutes to go, Cluj pulls a vital away goal back.
It took Celtic less than two minutes to restore their lead. The Romanians then went on the offensive.
In a naive attempt to soak up pressure and hang on, the Romanians clawed back not only an equalizer but also the winner in the 7th minute of stoppage time.
Celtic forward Ryan Christie said after the game:
“We need to be more street-smart.”
“Especially going up twice in the game and not really managing to see it out.”
“It’s a very bitter pill to swallow.”
“Everyone is absolutely devastated.”
“It’s all very raw.”
“We wanted to keep going and get a bit more of a cushion but at the same time we need to keep the back door shut and we didn’t do that.”
This was not the start to the season Neil Lennon team was wanting.
Christie went on to say:
“Coming off a treble-treble, you put in all that hard work to hopefully go and push on again the next season.”
Celtic will now drop down to play in a playoff game to qualify for the Europa League.
They await the winners of AIK or Moldovans Sheriff.
