Serbia earned a tough but good victory over Luxembourg to keep them hot on the tails of Ronaldo and company.
The Serbians took the lead through Mitrovic in the 36th minute and held onto their lead until the end of the half.
Within ten minutes of the restart, they had doubled their lead with a goal from Radonjic.
Luxembourg was not going to lay down though and pulled one back in the 66th through Turpel.
The minnows played like a team with home-field advantage and took the game to Serbia.
While the Serbians dominated possession with 60%. Luxembourg used their 40% to create opportunities. with 23 shots compared to Serbias 14.
Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain. As they hunted the equalizer, Mitrovic added a third in the 78th minute, to complete his brace and any hopes Luxembourg had to salvage anything from the game.
While all the talk is of Portugal’s resounding win, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally and the history books.
The Portuguese qualification has ben less than convincing. Ukraine are top with 13 points, Portugal second with eight and Serbia third with seven.
Luxembourg and Lithuania are routed to the bottom, with 4 and one points respectively.
Portugal still have to go to Ukraine and to guarantee qualification for Euro 2020, Ronaldo et al will have to get a result.
Ukraine has its place all but secured. While Portugal appears to be hitting their form just in time, but I wouldn’t right Serbia off just yet.
