Erling Haaland’s brace was not enough for his RB Salzburg side to avoid defeat as Napoli run out 2-3 winners in Austria.

The 19-year-old Norweigan sensation, was on the score sheet yet again for Salzburg, as he equalised twice.

But it simply wasn’t enough for his team to avoid defeat. According to the BBC, Salzburg dominated statistically.

With over half the possession and 18 shots, the hosts could have and should have simply done better.

However, they didn’t account for the prolific Dries Mertens.

Mertens opened the scoring in the game in the 17th minute.

The Belgian gave Carlo Ancelotti’s team the lead when he found the back of the net from a tight angle.

Callejon with the assist as he turned his marker and played him a neat pass. Mertens made no mistake firing a ferocious shot home.

17 minutes on the clock, Salzburg 0- 1 Napoli.

The 33rd minute saw the hosts forced into a substitution as goalkeeper Stankovic was replaced by Carlos.

Haaland’s first goal came from the penalty spot five minutes before the halftime break.

Napoli right-back Malcuit was embarrassed by Hwang just one too many times in the first half.

The defender just could not cope with the attacker,  Hwang nutmegged Malcuit and left him for dead, bursting into the penalty area.

Napoli’s man had no choice but to haul the South Korean to the ground.

The referee pointed straight to the penalty spot.

Haaland like a seasoned pro, sent the keeper the wrong way.

40 minutes gone, Salzburg 1 -1 Napoli.

After the break, Napoli’s Mertens got his 116th goal for the club, and passed the total accrued by none other than Diego Maradonna.

In the 64th minute, Malcuit made amends for his first-half blunder.

A ball in from the right-wing picked out Mertens at the back post. Virtually unmarked and uninhibited, Mertens slid the ball into the net.

Salzburg 1 – 2 Napoli.

Only eight minutes later, none other than Erling Haaland to the rescue.

Napoli did not deal with a cross from a corner initially, and Junuzovic got the chance to send in a second cross.

Haaland was left completely unmarked as the Napoli defence was in total disarray.

The teenager rose majestically and powered his header past the keeper and into the net.

72 minutes on the clock, Salzburg 2 – 2 Napoli.

As bad as Napoli’s defenders were, their strikers got the job done.

Under fire striker, Lorenzo Insigne got together wth Dries Mertens to restore their teams lead within a minute of conceding the equaliser.

Mertens played a powerful low driven ball into the box, Insigne had a beautiful touch and finish, as he drilled the ball past Carlos in the Salzburg goal.

Fulltime: Salzburg 2 – 3 Napoli.

Carlo Ancelotti will be satisfied with the win, but if his side are to advance to the latter stages of the competition, those defenders better get their act together,

As far as RB Salzburg are concerned, enjoy Erling Haaland while you can, because he will more than likely be the next big thing in the transfer window.
