Jose Mourinho has reportedly held talks with China’s richest man over a sensational return to management with Guangzhou Evergrande.
Mourinho has been out of work since leaving Manchester United in December 2018 following a dreadful start to last season.
The Portuguese coach has since taken up punditry roles, while waiting for the right managerial role to crop up. Although he has voiced his confidence on several occasions on returning to the dugout this summer.
Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan, Lyon and Newcastle United have all been touted as potential destinations for Mourinho.
The 56-year-old, though, was eventually overlooked for the Real and Juventus roles. A move to France in Lyon is unlikely given the club’s inability to challenge Paris Saint-Germain, while a relegation scrap with Newcastle doesn’t interest him either.
But talkSPORT has announced that Mourinho held a meeting with the most influential figure in Chinese football in Hui Jiayin.
The Chinese billionaire is the chairman of the group that finances Guangzhou Evergrande, who currently lead the Chinese Super League table.
Apparently, Hui Jiayin is on the lookout for some big names and had a good chat with Mourinho and recently held more talks with intermediaries.
While the role Mourinho is in negotiations over remains unclear, it’s understood to be either a managerial role with Guangzhou Evergrande or the Chinese national team.
It would mark a surprise turnaround for the Mourinho, who has enjoyed great success with some of the greatest clubs in Europe in Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
But things are allegedly progressing well between the Special One and Hui Jiayin, with talkSPORT claiming an agreement is close to being reached.
This surprise development comes less than a day after Mourinho confessed an interest in returning to Italy someday.
