Harry Maguire has been given the number 5 shirt at Manchester United.
Manutd.com, today officially confirmed the shirt number of Harry Maguire will be the iconic number 5.
Maguire became the worlds most expensive defender earlier this week.
He was acquired from Leicester City for a fee of 80 million pounds. Maguire put pen to paper on a 6-year contract with the Red Devils.
all the pictures and photoshoots were of the England international wearing United’s famous red jersey. But there was no sign of a shirt number.
Maguire wore the number 15 while at Leicester City. But at his previous clubs Hull and Sheffield, he did wear the number 5.
While on international duty he has worn the number 6 shirt for the Three Lions.
In one of his first official interviews as a United player, he happened to mention that one of his heroes growing up was Rio Ferdinand.
The retired United legend made the number 5 shirt his own at the club.
Maguire will no doubt have had his eye on the availability of the number once Marcos Rojo vacated it for the number 16 last season.
Ferdinand said of the new signing:
“After speaking to numerous people that know him, they all say what a level-headed, hard-working lad.”
“He will give 110 percent for his team, which he echoed when signing.”
The number five has also been recently worn by players such as Laurent Blanc, Ronny Johnsen, and Lee Sharpe.
If the pressure of being the most expensive defender in the world was not enough.
Harry Maguire must now fill the shirt vacated by one of the best defenders of a generation.
Plus a United hero and legend who still to this day after retiring has a cult following.
