Manchester United have reportedly lodged a €95m bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
After suffering such a disappointing season, United chairman Ed Woodward has promised manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer funds for this summer to help him turn things around.
Three weeks after their Premier League campaign ended, Solskjaer appears to be closing in on his first signing in Daniel James from Swansea City. While United have made no official announcement, the BBC reported that they have agreed on a deal in “principle”.
The 21-year-old midfielder has also allegedly completed a medical. So, the English giants could present him to the media next week once FIFA’s transfer window opens.
However, Solskjaer continues to work hard behind the scenes for summer recruits and has decided his defence needs addressing. This will be unsurprising to most people as United finished last season with only the Premier League’s 11th-best defensive record.
The Red Devils conceded 54 times in total compared to champions Manchester City’s record of 23. While Tottenham, who secured the final top-four spot last season, finished with 39 goals conceded.
Therefore, United have begun their pursuit for defensive reinforcements and have targetted Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt. Although the 19-year-old hasn’t made his mind up, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain also keen on him.
Therefore, Corriere dello Sport claims United have made signing Koulibaly their priority in the transfer window. The Italian outlet stated that the Red Devils have lodged a €95m to Napoli.
Since joining from Genk in 2014, Koulibaly has established himself as one of the world’s finest defenders. The 27-year-old’s performances in Italy have helped turn lowly Napoli into Juventus’ prime challengers for the Serie A crown.
Former Bianconeri coach Fabio Capello even stated in February that Koulibaly was Napoli’s answer to Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Senegal international’s release clause of €150m will become active in next summer. Therefore, United will be under pressure to wrap up a deal for him before September.
Apparently, though, Ligue 1 champions PSG have also been keeping tabs on Koulibaly.
