Report: Manchester City plot last-ditch talks with Leroy Sane

Manchester City are reportedly plotting a final attempt in convincing Bayern Munich target Leroy Sane to sign a new contract.

Despite winning the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year last season, Sane was frequently relegated to the City bench this term.

Nonetheless, the Germany international still managed 16 goals and 18 assists in 47 appearances to help City win a historic domestic treble.

With just two years left on his contract, however, fears have begun to creep in over Sane’s long-term future at the Etihad Stadium.

At the age of 23, the likelihood of Sane becoming an even greater player is a strong possibility and one that hasn’t unnoticed by Bayern either.

The Bundesliga champions confirmed their interest in Sane on Thursday. In fact, the Guardian journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that talks have begun between City and Bayern over an €80m deal.

Niko Kovac’s side are obviously in need of finding replacements for both Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who will leave in June once their contract have expired.

But Sky Sports reported that City are in no mood to part with one of their prized assets and plan to begin talks over a contract extension.

However, Sane will likely first seek reassurances over his role in the line-up after making just 21 starts in City’s 38 Premier League games this season.

Citizens boss Pep Guardiola has instead favoured playing Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva down the flanks.

And things likely hit a new low for Sane last weekend, where he was reduced to a mere 17-minute cameo in City’s 6-0 FA Cup final win over Watford.

The German winger arrived at City in the summer of 2016 from Schalke 04 in a €50m deal.

Sane has since gone on to make 133 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League champions. He’s also provided 39 goals and 45 assists.
