Martin Odegaard insists he will return to Real Madrid to fulfill his dreams.
Martin Odegaard has been loaned out by Real Madrid for two years to Real Sociedad.
But he insists he is going back to Santiago Bernabeau to fulfill his dream of playing for Madrid.
There has been plenty of speculation about the young Norwegian’s future, and whether he can make it at the top.
In a recent interview with ESPN, Odegaard insisted his focus is enjoying his football, helping Sociedad and one day returning to Real.
“When I’m playing football, that’s when I’m enjoying life the most.”
“Football is the most important thing and I just want to do everything to reach my potential and be the best I can be.”
Odegaard was 16 years old when he signed for Real Madrid. The rumour was that the Spaniard’s beat off a host of other big clubs vying for his signature.
It was soon apparent that he was not yet first team material. Although he is adamant going straight into the first was never part of the plan.
“As I started so young, there were unrealistic expectations.”
“It was never the plan to go there and get straight into the first team — I knew it was going to take time.”
“One of the reasons I went to Madrid was because I knew I could play for Castilla and still train with the first team.”
“I never stressed about it. Of course, I wanted to play some more games and a few more in the first year, but that’s football.”
Life became difficult at Real, as opportunities were scarce, and he was not playing much. While he has been on other loans, he feels this is perhaps the best one yet.
“It’s better to be here and getting used to La Liga and the language, so it was the natural step in this way.”
“There were a lot of teams interested after last season but for me, it’s important to have the feeling the club really wants you and the way this club plays suits me.”
“These things are more important than Champions League football to me at this stage.”
“I got really inspired here, and I felt like the project was perfect for me.”
“I felt like the club really wanted me and the way the coach wanted to play was the perfect match for me. It felt right.”
Odegaard has every intention of seeing out the full two years of his current deal at Sociedad.
“My intention is to stay [at Sociedad] two years and I think that’s important for me, too.”
“I have had two seasons in a row where I’ve changed teams.”
“To have some stability is good [and] this is a great club and hopefully we can get European football for next season.”
However, he is adamant he wants to return to Real and represent Los Blancos,
“I’m dreaming to be the best I can be. You never know what happens in football but my dream, and what I’m hoping for is to play for Madrid.”
