English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs side. They have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by a team three divisions below them.
Colchester United are in the fourth tier of English Football, which is commonly known as League two.
After all the allotted time, the game was tied at 0-0.
Spurs first mistake was to not take care of business inside of 90 minutes.
To hold a team of Tottenham’s stature to a goalless draw would have been successful enough for the soon to be giant killers.
But then the game went to the Russian roulette of a penalty shootout. Where if the truth be known league standing means very little.
You need players with nerves of steel, a goalkeeper who can guess the right way, and lots, and lots of luck.
Wantaway Spurs star Christian Eriksen’s first kick of the shootout was saved by Colchester’s keeper Dean Gerken.
But the home side looked to have wasted their gifted advantage when Jevani Brown tried an audacious ‘Panenka’ effort.
It went horribly wrong, the kick was so weak that Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga was able to abort his dive, stand up and punch the ball to safety.
From that point on both sides matched each other efforts.
With the game tied at 3-3, up stepped Spurs’ Lucas Moura, only for the ever-dependable Brazilian to smash his shot against the bar.
All the pressure was now on Colchester’s Tom Lapslie. Cool as a cucumber, up he stepped to bury the ball in the back of the net.
Sending his side into the last 16 of the one time league cup for the first time in 44 years, and consequently sending the Colchester United fans into a state of delirium.
