Reigning World Champions France narrowly defeat Iceland 0-1.
An injury-ravaged France side, only got into more trouble, when N’Golo Kante picked up an injury before the game even started, and was replaced by Moussa Sissoko.
Didier Deschamps’s side was already missing Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba, and Hugo Lloris.
His first choice striker for today’s game was Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman is struggling for game time at club level, after being ousted from the side by Tammy Abraham.
But no matter, when Giroud was called upon in the 66th minute, he stepped up and converted the spot-kick, to give his side the lead and ultimately the victory.
France sits second in Group H behind Turkey.
With both sides on 18 points, the next game between the two in Paris will be decisive in deciding who will take top spot.
The quality of the game generally was poor.
France could not create their usual free-flowing supply line to the forwards. Antoine Griezamnn was starved of any kind of service at all.
Kante and Pogba were seriously missed in the heart of the midfield.
Griezmann won the penalty which Giroud converted.
The closest anyone else came to scoring, was when Blaise Matuidi hot the woodwork.
A win is a win for Les Bleus.
Had it not been for a last-minute winner for the Turks against Albania, thye would have been sitting pretty at the top of the group, with qualification guaranteed
Antoine Giezmann told the press after the game:
“It was a very tough game but we ground through and Olivier’s goal did the job.”
Didier Deschamps added:
“We had several chances to add to our goal and it would have been nice because they are dangerous on set pieces.”
“But it’s a good victory ahead of Monday’s clash.”
Iceland 0 – 1 France.
