Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, spoke ironically when he realized that Jose Mourinho was lining up a very different starting XI vs Arsenal.

One of the biggest complaints coming from people like Rio Ferdinand about Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, is the fact that the Red Devils don’t have a defined style of play or a base line up.

For this Wednesday’s crucial match against Arsenal at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho decided to sit down players like Paul Pogba or Romalu Lukaku and didn’t even use them until the second half.

The Portuguese manager has been sparring with his players in the last few weeks over different subjects, the manager allegedly has a very bad relationship with several of these professionals and seems to be counting the hours until Manchester United actually gets sacked by Ed Woodward.

This Wednesday’s match against Arsenal was crucial for the club’s wishes to stay relevant in the competition, but Jose Mourinho’s initial lineup gave Rio Ferdinand the idea that they didn’t really care for getting the win at Old Trafford against Unai Emery’s Gunners.

Rio’s initial reaction as the transmission was ongoing for BT Sport, was to gasp on the very moment that he realized how many of the starring players were on the bench for such an important match.

“Some bench there, I have to say. They’ve got a great bench with [Romelu] Lukaku, [Juan] Mata, [Paul] Pogba, [Marouane] Fellaini. I mean, phenomenal,” joked Rio Ferdinand as quoted by Goal.

“Yeah, he’s made changes, and after seeing the performance on the weekend against Southampton I agree with him, they needed to be some changes within that team, and as drastic as they are, it will remain to be seen if that ’s the right decision.”

“Listen, something needs to be done. The common thing that we’ve seen with this team under Mourinho is changes every week – changes, changes, changes.”

“That doesn’t bode well for me in terms of for the players and for the team because you need to form relationship within a team and you can’t do that when there’s chopping and changing week in and week out,” he added.

The match itself was quite entertaining, the first half started with a terrible mistake committed by David de Gea in which he failed to stop a shot from a distance and the goal line technology condemned him to give Arsenal the lead.

It took the Red Devils only a few minutes to respond through Anthony Martial’s goal, he received a cross from Ander Herrera from the left after Marcos Rojo’s free-kick effort forced the goalkeeper to spit the ball out.

These two goals happened during the first half hour of the game, the following 15 minutes were filled with fouls and bookings from both sides as they completely forgot to play football until the second half.

When the two clubs returned to the pitch for the second half, Marcos Rojo made a terrible mistake that ended in the Argentine scoring an own goal, he was seen very upset for his error after he was replaced by Marouane Fellaini in the second half.

But the hero of the night was Jesse Lingard, who managed to score the equalizer with 20 minutes still on the clock.

It was a very competitive match, but we also ask ourselves why so many great players were left on the bench by Mourinho.
