Brazilian legend Rivaldo is backing his compatriot to fulfill his potential and seize the title of best footballer in the world, more than once.

The closest Neymar has come to being crowned Ballon d’Or winner and officially the best footballer on the planet is two third-place finishes. One in 2015 and another in 2017.

The 28-year-old has had a couple of fifth-place rankings as well as a seventh-place finish. However, the illustrious golden ball has alluded him so far in his career.

He has lived primarily in the shadow of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Neymar has by all accounts been there or thereabouts but never quite fulfilled his full potential

His compatriot and 1999 Ballon d’Or winner Rivaldo feels that the player is about to come of age and reach the top.

Speaking to Betfair he talks of how he has seen a remarkable change in personality and attitude from the PSG star and greatness is close.

He believes that he can dominate football’s most prestigious accolade for a couple of years at least.

Rivaldo said:

“Neymar has been receiving plaudits for the way he is focusing on his football. His attitude seems to be just right at the moment and that can only bode well for PSG in the Champions League.”

“He’s already 28-years-old, so perhaps he felt it was time to concentrate on being again that sensational player who could easily claim a Ballon d’Or or, in my view, two or three.”

“It’s not easy for a player to exclusively focus on football when they’re surrounded by so much noise and distraction. But Neymar looks more controlled in his behavior now and he’s only showing up on the news for his achievements on the pitch which makes me very happy.”

“I’m a great admirer of Neymar and I want him to become the best in the world. I believe that can happen naturally if he manages to keep this new attitude from now on as he is clearly on the right path.”

While we are on the subject of Ballon d’Or, why not test your knowledge on everything “golden balls?”
