Brazil legend Rivaldo reckons Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen aren’t needed at Real Madrid despite their awful start to pre-season.
Reports have strongly linked Pogba and Eriksen with summer moves to Real as part of the club’s rebuilding process. Considering their heavy spending already, though, it’s likely they will have to pick between the pair.
Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane has allegedly made it clear he wants Pogba at the Santiago Bernabeu. Aiding his attempts is the midfielder’s agent, Mino Raiola, trying to force an exit from Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Eriksen is seemingly set to leave Tottenham with just a year left on his current contract. Manchester United, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have all reportedly expressed an interest in the Denmark international.
And Zidane will likely be putting the pressure on Real president Florentino Perez to open the chequebook again for either Pogba or Eriksen following their terrible pre-season. So far, the Spanish giants have lost three of their five games and conceded 16 goals.
But Rivaldo doesn’t agree with Zidane or the Spanish media on this one.
“The press are saying that Madrid need to reinforce their midfield, with Cristian Eriksen and Paul Pogba among the rumoured targets. Both are excellent players and would fit well at the Bernabeu,” the ex-Barcelona star wrote on Betfair.
“In spite of their bad pre-season, I’m not sure that Madrid need reinforcements.
“Critics of Madrid’s midfield should not forget that Casemiro is only returning to the team now after injury, so they have been playing without their starting defensive midfielder and one of the most important players.
“Madrid will improve with Casemiro back in the squad, although his absence doesn’t explain their awful pre-season.”
Next-up for Real will be Red Bull Salzburg for another friendly in Austria on August 7.
