Barcelona legend Rivaldo believes that Cristiano Ronaldo was the rightful winner for the 2018 Ballon d’Or award
The Portuguese superstar had another stunning campaign at Real Madrid, where he finished with 44 goals in as many games along with inspiring the club to a third straight Champions League title.
Aside from that, Ronaldo also impressed in football’s biggest stage in the World Cup this summer for Portugal – which saw him score a memorable opening day hat-trick against Spain.
But, in the end, it was Ronaldo’s former Real team-mate Luka Modric who won the Ballon d’Or in Paris on Monday night.
“It’s always tough to give your opinion about this subject,” Rivaldo told Betfair.
“Luka Modric had a great season in 2018, winning the Champions League and helping Croatia to be in the World Cup final, but if I had to choose, I would vote for Ronaldo.
“The Portuguese scored a lot of goals last season, won the Champions League – scoring a sensational goal against Juventus away from home.
“He also proved his value at the World Cup scoring four times, including a hat-trick against Spain, so I believe that he deserved the award more than anyone else.”
The 2002 World Cup doubts that Ronaldo’s summer switch from Real to Juventus had a negative effect on his Ballon d’Or chances this year.
“Some people are mentioning that Ronaldo’s club change could have contributed to losing the award,” Rivaldo said.
“But I don’t agree with that as most of the decisive moments had already happened when he left Real Madrid to sign for Juventus, so there are no reasons to consider that a handicap.”
