After a relatively successful first season at Man City, Riyad Mahrez hopes he can improve more at the club in order to earn a spot in the Starting XI.
Riyad Mahrez was the only transfer that Man City made last summer ahead of the new season, Guardiola saw him as the only viable option.
The Citizens didn’t really need to get many reinforcements last summer as they were just fresh out of a record-breaking Premier League season.
This limited the club’s options for buying potential players who could actually help the club to a very short list, Mahrez was one of those players.
The Algerian international was coming from recently winning the Premier League with Leicester City and being selected by his peers as the Players’ Player of the Year 2016.
This resume was more than enough for Pep Guardiola to consider signing the star last summer, but Mahrez would take a little time to fully adapt to the squad.
During the current season, the winger only starred in 14 Premier League matches and didn’t have much participation.
However, Pep Guardiola still regards him as one of the footballers who can make the Citizens stronger next season as a lot more is expected from him after this summer.
The adaptation process is nearly completed and he proved it last Sunday by scoring one of the goals that gave Manchester City the title.
Mahrez was interviewed last Sunday after the Citizens beat Liverpool to win their second consecutive Premier League title.
The player responded to questions from the press about his future at the club, he is not expecting to leave anytime soon.
Mahrez actually believes that he will have more opportunities next season and he is eager to help his squad compete for all the titles next season.
Riyad is convinced that Pep Guardiola trusts his abilities and he also thinks he will be more competitive next season in order to fight for a spot in the starting XI.
“I need to stay strong because it’s part of my personality,” said Mahrez via BBC Sport.
“I’m very happy here. It’s not that because I don’t play I’m going to go somewhere else. It’s part of the game.”
“I’m never going to go away from teams. That’s easy to do but I’m very confident about my quality and there’s another season next season.”
“I’m very confident about myself and never doubt my quality,” said Mahrez.
“It’s not easy to come to a team, a squad, who won everything last season. I knew when I had my chance I would take it.”
“I scored, I helped the team, we played very good, and we deserved to win the league. I know the league. I did a lot of things in this league already.”

Mahrez is one of Manchester City’s biggest hopes.
Although Pep Guardiola has a complicated transfer history with his clubs, the Catalan manager still trusts on Riyad Mahrez’s potential to become one of the best players in the world.
The Catalan manager convinced Manchester City to spend big for this player last summer, thinking that he would reach his true potential after a year of adapting to his concepts.
The Citizens paid €65 million to Leicester City and they trust that they made a good investment.
Mahrez has proved that he is a disciplined player who believes in hard work and the club is very happy with his results on the first season.
As one of the African players inside the squad, Riyad Mahrez has a huge responsibility to live up to the expectations.
In fact, this player is currently doing everything in his power to make the fans believe that he wasn’t just a “one season wonder” as it’s usually believed with players from his continent.
Mahrez proved that he is one of the most creative offensive players of his generation during that magical season at Leicester City.
All he needs to do is prove the same at a bigger club such as Manchester City, he is on the right track at the moment.
From missing the penalty in the final minute at Anfield, to scoring the goal that wins Manchester City the title.
