Ex-Real Madrid midfielder Jose Rodriguez claims Jose Mourinho told him that he would make him the “most famous gypsy” alive
The now-Manchester United coach had high hopes for Rodriguez while in charge of Real between 2010 and 2013.
But the Spaniard would only make four appearances for the senior team before going on to play for the likes of Deportivo La Coruna, Galatasaray, Mainz and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
“When something like that happens at that age, you don’t enjoy it because you don’t even really know who you are yourself,” Rodriguez told AS.
“Mou told me: ‘I’m going to make you the most famous gypsy in the world’ and I couldn’t stop laughing. I cannot explain with words how I used to feel when the best coach in the world started talking to me or gave me advice.”
Rodriguez surpassed the record set by legendary striker Raul to become Real’s youngest ever Champions League player in 2012 as a substitute against Ajax.
He was just 17 years and 353 days old.
“Six years have passed and I’m still remembered for that everywhere I go, it’s incredible,” Rodriguez added.
The former Los Blancos youth player now plays for Dutch side Fortuna Sittard on loan from 1. FSV Mainz 05.
