Raphael Varane had a nightmare game against Manchester City, but teammate Rodrygo insists one game does not define him as a player.

Raphael Varane was the first to stand up and admit he had a substandard game against Manchester City in the Champions League Round of 16 match at the Etihad Stadium.

The French World Cup winner also insisted it was his performance and errors that cost his side a place in the quarter-finals.

Varane is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the business and teammate Rodrygo has jumped to his defense.

In an interview reported by Goal, he said:

“It’s something that happens sometimes.”

“It’s a pity, but he’s a great player and I don’t think this is going to stain the legacy he has at Real Madrid.”

The right-winger was disappointed with the result but honest in his assessment of the opponent.

He added:

“I feel sad, but we fought until the end.

“It was hard for us to score because they’re a great team. They are very strong here at home.”
