Roma guaranteed their place in the Last 16 of the Europa League with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Gent.

The Romans arrived in Belgium with a one-goal lead from the first leg.

However, things did not quite go to plan in the early stages.

With 25 minutes on the clock, Jonathan David grabbed a goal for the hosts.

A deep cross from the right-wing sailed over the Roma defenders, and David came in from behind to strike perfectly to make it 1-0 on the night and 1-1 on aggregate.

The tie looked like it had been blown wide open. But Roma had other plans.

They struck back almost immediately.

Only four minutes later Justin Kluivert restored the aggregate lead, with an all-important away goal.

Kluivert made a lightning-quick run on to the through ball from Mkhitaryan.

The home side did not give up and dominated for long periods, but Gent could not find another goal.

Roma defender Chris Smalling was on hand to make some last-ditch tackles and blocks to keep his sides progress a sure thing.
