Roma has more injury problems, as Davide Zappacosta ruptures his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and undergoes immediate surgery.

Italian defender Davide Zappacosta was signed on a six-month-long loan deal by AS Roma from the English Premier League side from Chelsea.

Since his arrival in Rome, he has only made one 12 minute cameo appearance in Serie A.

This is his second injury since arriving in the Italian capital. He suffered calf injury during the warm-up for the Rome derby with Lazio.

He was deemed surplus to requirements by new Chelsea boos  Frank Lampard and allowed to leave during the summer transfer window.

News of his injury surfaced Friday late morning. A statement was released later in the day by the Roma.

The statement read:

“During Friday’s training session, defender Davide Zappacosta suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, in a non-contact incident.”

“The club would like to offer its sincerest sympathies to the player and wishes him a quick and full recovery.”

The extent of the injury was not relayed. But only hours later, a further statement was released, confirming that surgery had taken place on the injury.

The second club statement read:

“The club can confirm that Davide Zappacosta underwent surgery on Friday afternoon to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.”

“The operation was carried out by Professor Mariani, at Villa Stuart private hospital in Rome.”

“The surgery was a success and the player will start the rehabilitation process imminently.”

There has been no official take on the matter as yet from Chelsea. But this could see his loan agreement terminated and him return to London.

The coming days, will give a better picture of the recovery time. However, it is not uncommon for an ACL injury to cause a player to sit out an entire season.

This is Zappacosta’s first major injury of his career. Prior to this, he has suffered minor muscle injuries only.

This should bode well for his ability to recover in a timely fashion.
