Following a poor 2018/19 campaign in the Serie A, not much has been written about AS Roma who could spring a few surprises next season.
AS Roma fans can only wistfully watch as the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli continue strengthening their respective squads.
Juventus have been dominating Italian football for a decade and are likely to continue doing so following some really strong moves. The likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot have signed for the Turin giants and make them stronger than ever.
Napoli already have a great squad and are just a signing or two away from becoming genuine title contenders.
While Inter Milan have blown hot and cold in the last few years, the Nerazzurri are full of hope and promise following the arrival of Antonio Conte.
The same however, cannot be said of AS Roma. I Giallorossi struggled with managerial changes throughout last season and even lost legendary midfielder, Daniele De Rossi. Fans did not agree with the decision and have been against the ownership all summer.
In Paulo Fonseco, the team has a manager who might be able to add a bit of stability to a team that is going through changes. While they cannot spend a lot of money on big names, Roma still have a decent squad that can do well if managed the right way.
In the shape of Nicolo Zaniolo, Roma have an up and coming talent who could become a world beater. The young Italian exudes grace and confidence and could become the latest of one club men who have graced Stadio Olimpico over the years.
Cengiz Under is a young player who needs stability around him in order to really shine on a regular basis. The young Turk didn’t have that last season. But with Fonseca in charge, the speedy winger might be able to put in a string of consistent performances and become the sort of offensive player everyone knows he can be.
The same can be said of Patrik Schick. Edin Dzeko is already angling for a move to Inter Milan. And if the Nerazzurri is unable to sign Romelu Lukaku, the Bosnian might leave for San Siro. Schick didn’t really shine in his first season in Rome but could come good under a manager who knows how to deal with young prospects.
Lorenzo Pellegrini showcased a lot of promise last season. The central midfielder is really good when it comes to instigating attacking moves and with Fonseca’s acumen, the young Italian would definitely have more freedom to play to his potential.
Jordan Vertout recently signed from Fiorentina and the French midfielder is going to add a lot of dynamism to the midfield. With a great ability to break up play and spread play, the Frenchman could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Roma.
Next season is just around the corner and while Roma haven’t have the best of times of late, chances are that Fonseca could put together a team that will make it difficult for the top four to bite and chew.
While they might not win any silverware next season, Roma have all the quality they need in the squad to be there and about when it comes to Champions League qualification.
