The future of Chris Smalling is very much up in the air after he was summoned back to Manchester United, the question where next for the defender?

Where Chris Smalling ends up next season is anyone’s guess right now.

Smalling was ushered out of the Old Trafford door on loan last summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisting the player needed more playing time.

Much to everyone’s surprise he was a resounding success at AS Roma. The Italian side wants to keep the player but apparently can’t meet United’s financial demands.

So what now for the former England defender?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted at the fact he could still have a future with the Red Devils, after admitting he has been impressed with his work in Serie A.

Roma and apparently the player are still hopeful they can reach an agreement with United and thrash out a deal to bring him back to the Italian Capital.

There is the possibility that Ed Woodward uses the defender as a makeweight in a complex transfer triangle. It would see Alexis Sanchez go to the San Siro with Smalling, plus some cash, and Antonio Conte sends Milan Skriniar to the Theatre of Dreams.

The final option which has been circulating around the rumor mill is Juventus. The Turin club wants Smalling who is now proven in Serie A. With Solskjaer in need of attacking reinforcements, they are willing to send Federico Bernardeschi in the opposite direction.

Or will Smalling end up somewhere else?
