Romelu Lukaku began life at Inter Milan by scoring four goals in an 8-0 thrashing of Virtus Bergamo on Sunday afternoon.
Lukaku, who completed a deadline day transfer of €65m from United to Inter on Thursday, took no time at all to make his mark in Italy.
The 26-year-old has suffered a difficult few months after falling out of favour at Old Trafford. Head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer simply didn’t rate him, and instead preferred Marcus Rashford as his main centre-forward.
Adding to Lukaku’s woes was that he didn’t feature even once for United during pre-season. Therefore, he gladly took his chance to leave when Inter finally struck an agreement to sign him.
Despite missing out on Saturday’s friendly win over Valencia, however, Lukaku made his first appearance in a Nerazzurri jersey less than 24 hours later.
Manager Antonio Conte fielded a much-changed team from the one that faced Valencia in Spain for a friendly against Bergamo. However, Lukaku wasn’t disheartened and quickly made his mark by scoring four goals.
The Belgium international wore the number nine shirt, which was previously Mauro Icardi’s, for the clash.
Despite the brilliant start, though, Conte had warned the club’s record signing to work hard on his fitness and tactics.
“He needs to work hard, both from a physical point of view and to get used to the way we’re trying to go about things,” said Conte on Saturday.
“He’ll certainly be an excellent signing, we’re really happy. He’ll show great desire and commitment to get himself ready.”
Meanwhile, Matias Vecino and Sebastiano Esposito both bagged braces to help complete an 8-0 victory over the fourth division side.
Lukaku is now preparing for a possible Serie A debut in Inter’s season opener against Lecce on August 26.
