Romelu Lukaku issued rivals a warning that there is still room for improvement after his and Lautaro Martinez’s braces secured Inter Milan a 4-3 win over Sassuolo.
Lukaku and Martinez scored all four goals on Sunday to snap Inter out of a two-match winless run. Although it was a close call in the end, with Serie A strugglers Sassuolo launching a late comeback to nearly snatch a point.
But Inter ultimately held on to close back to within a point of Serie A leaders Juventus in the standings.
While Lukaku, who had only scored one goal in his last six matches, responded in style with his first brace for Inter. His first goal, in fact, came from a powerful drive before he later slotted home a penalty.
So, the former Manchester United striker has now taken his tally up to five goals in eight Serie A appearances.
“We did everything right in the first half and should have scored more in the second,” Lukaku told DAZN.
“Once it goes to 3-1 and 4-1, it ought to be over. The positive we take is that we got the three points, but we need to defend better than that.
“I’m feeling good but need to work even harder to help out the team for the entirety of matches. I’m happy today because the victory was important for the group. Now, I’ll only think about improving still further.”
Although it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Antonio Conte’s men when Sassuolo scored two late goals shortly after Martinez’s penalty to set-up a tense finale. However, they held on for a 4-3 win in the end.
And Martinez later teased that there is more to come from his new partnership with Lukaku. The strike duo incidentally both scored one goal from open play and another from the penalty spot.
“We are working to play well together, we are also playing a different football than last year and we always work,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“We are getting to know each other day after day and this is good for Inter’s sake.
“The goal arrived immediately helps to find tranquillity but we can no longer afford to make us recover all these goals, we must also work on this aspect “.
Inter will next play host to Borussia Dortmund at the San Siro on Wednesday for a Champions League match.
