Two goals from Paulo Dybala in the space of two minutes won the game for Juventus against Lokomotiv Moscow, but CR7 misses out on another record for now.
Paulo Dybala was the preferred strike partner of Cristiano Ronaldo, as Gonzalo Higuain was dropped to the bench.
Cristiano Ronaldo was on the prowl for another record, this time to have scored against 33 different Champions League opponents.
But tonight wasn’t to be.
It was all about Paulo Dybala in the end.
Juventus were the dominant force on the field from the very start.
According to the BBC, they had almost 80% possession on the night, and whopping 28 shots, of which seven were on target.
In the very first minutes, Moscow’s Corluka almost gifted the hosts the lead with an own goal.
A shot from Dybala took a wicked deflection, and luckily for the Russians, it hit the side netting.
The opening 20 minutes saw Juve unleash a barrage of attempts on the Moscow goal, with defender’s bodies flying left and right ot block the attempts.
The wasteful Bianconerri were made to pay for their lack of quality in front of goal.
Right on the stroke of the half-hour mark, Aleksey Miranchuk got away from his marker Bonucci and set up Joao Mario.
Mario’s shot was saved by Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, but the rebound was buried in the back of the net by an attentive Miranchuk.
30 minutes on the clock, Juventus 0 – 1 Lokomotiv Moscow.
Dybala thought he had got his side back in the game before the interval, only for play to be brought back, after Ronaldo all but took out keeper Guilherme in the build-up.
The score stayed 0-1 going into the break.
The second half carried on much the same as the first, with an almost continuous onslaught from Juventus on the Moscow goal.
Maurizio Sarri knew he needed more from his side, and after only three minutes into the second half, he swapped Sami Khedira fro Gonzalo Higuain.
The pressure on the visitors continued, with Colombian Cuadrado sending dangerous balls into the box.
Only for nobody to make use of the crosses that were merely screaming to be put in the back of the net.
Higuain missed two glorious hances after being introduced, shooting wide with the first and heading over the bar with his second.
It appeared not to be Juvetnus’s night, as nothing seemed to want to g into the net.
That was until the 77th minute when Dybala let rip a cracking curling shot from the edge of the box.
Leaving the Moscow keeper Guilherme about soltuley no hope of saving.
Juventus 1 – 1 Lokomotiv Moscow.
No Dybala had a taste for goal, it only took him two minutes to get his brace, and give Juve the lead.
This time it was far less elaborate and more a typical poacher’s goal.
Juve left-back Alex Sandro let a rocket of a shot go from distance, and the ball was goal bound. But Guilherme madea cracking one-handed save.
Unfortunately for him and his teammates from Moscow, Dybala was on hand to pick up the scraps and poke the ball home.
The goal killed the visitor’s spirit, and the host was now content to ride out the last ten minutes.
Final score:Juventus 2 – 1 Lokomotiv Moscow
