Neither the Barcelona talisman nor the Juventus superstar matches the intensity of the late Argentine legend, claims Jorge Jesus.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s imposing success levels have not only helped them become global icons for football but also modern-day legends.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward won a plethora of club trophies and individual accolades in two of the world’s toughest leagues and then joined Juventus to keep polishing his legacy.
The Barcelona captain, on the other hand, gave rise to arguably the club’s greatest era ever during which they dominated and pushed the boundaries of Spanish football all while being a mainstay.
As glittering as the pair’s trophy cabinets are, the World Cup still allures them and it seems unlikely they’ll ever win one with both nearing the end of their careers.
Jorge Jesus, however, has made a shocking statement about their ‘passion’ for football as he claims that the late Diego Maradona stood above both Ronaldo and Messi in that particular aspect.
“Today, among the best two in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo has a little of that (what Maradona had). Messi has nothing. He doesn’t have any passion,” the Benfica boss told reporters, via Goal.
“Messi is a great player. But we’re talking about life and feelings, having passion for the game and for football.
“I think Maradona was above anyone in that regard.”
