Ronaldo Nazario reveals how the decision to leave Barcelona was not his and how he thought a new contract to stay was agreed upon.
Ronaldo Nazario really shot to fame when he was part of the Galacticos of Real Madrid. However, many forget he was once a Barcelona player first.
The Brazilian legend had been at the Camp Nou for only a year.
He was so impressive that the club wanted to tie him down to a new and improved deal almost immediately.
In an interview with DAZN Italy, Ronaldo revealed that he left for the summer thinking that a new deal was signed, sealed and delivered….only to get a call a few days later to be told he was not coming back and had been sold to Inter Milan.
“I’d signed a contract renewal at the end of the season and I went away with the Brazil national team.”
“Five days later, they called me to tell me that I couldn’t continue with the renewal.”
“It was never in my hands. I wanted to stay.”
“If the club didn’t value me as I thought they should, then the decision wasn’t in my hands.”
“I would have liked to have stayed, but it wasn’t up to me.”
The move to Italy was a world record back then, the equivalent of 28 million Euros.
You can see why Inter were so determined to get their man and pay that record fee.
What beggars belief is why did Barcelona sell such a prodigious talent?
