The final three for the Ballon d’Or award have been revealed but Cristiano Ronaldo is not anywhere near the list.
The Portuguese superstar and Lionel Messi, who is also believed to have been snubbed from the final three, are both absent from the final three for the first time in 11 years.
Luka Modric looks set to have a clear run to the Ballon d’Or award to go with his The Best FIFA Award.
Joining the Croatia international on the podium are two players from France’s 23 man squad which triumphed at the World Cup in Russia.
Tuttosport insists Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane will join Modric on the final shortlist.
“Varane may well be there, Griezmann, Mbappe… I think a Frenchman should win,” the PSG striker told RMC.
“There are other players who could win it, but it should be a Frenchman, they have won the World Cup.”
“Modric has had a great season, but his team-mate Varane won the Champions League and the World Cup. Modric was a finalist and had a great campaign, but Varane deserves it more.”
The order of the final three isn’t a certainty yet but Modric is the favourite for the award after RFI reported that half the votes had been collated by November 9 and the Real Madrid midfielder was on top of that list, Varane the runner-up and Mbappe third.
