Who among the Portugal and Argentina captains deserves the ‘GOAT’ status remains one of the most talked-about subjects in football.
Former Germany international Arne Friedrich has offered a fresh viewpoint on the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate by claiming it is tougher to defend against the latter.
Shortly after Messi’s breakthrough with FC Barcelona and Ronaldo’s rise to prominence at Manchester United began the comparison between the two players.
The debate over who is better or who deserves to be called the absolute best in the world reached its peak during the pair’s time together in Spain.
Many years have passed but there’s still no definitive end result to that debate despite the involvement of the media, fans, players, and managers alike.
A German football legend, who has played against both the players who share 11 Ballons d’Or between them, however, believes there is only one right answer.
“I was able to play against both Messi and Ronaldo,” Friedrich said in an exclusive interview with Goal and SPOX.
“If I had to commit myself to one, it would be Messi. He has a different center of gravity, Ronaldo is more my size.
“Both are at the same level, but Messi was harder to defend for me because he had a different style of play.”
“I really liked it when I could concentrate on the defensive side of things against good opponents and shut them down. I had more problems when I didn’t have much to do on the defensive side and a lot of space up front. That wasn’t my greatest strength.”
