A former colleague of Cristiano Ronaldo has shed light on the football icon’s gracious nature as well as his intense passion.

Real Madrid’s Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, ending the long-running duopoly of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo and Messi had been dominating the award for the better part of the last decade, with the pair sharing 10 of those Golden Balls between them prior to being usurped by Modric.

Although the Croatian’s success was generally accepted by the football fanatics, eyebrows were raised at the decision of awarding him the supreme individual honor.

A few fans and pundits believed that the Portuguese forward deserved to claim his sixth award of the kind for leading Real Madrid to their third successive Champions League title, and felt he was hard done by. It led to rumors that a bitterness arose between Ronaldo and Modric as a result.

Modric, however, has dismissed any such claims insisting that he has a healthy relationship with his former teammate.

“With Cristiano, we are still in contact and when I won [the Ballon d’Or], he wrote to me,” he told FourFourTwo, via RMC Sport.

“When someone like him sends you a message to congratulate you, it means a lot, because he knows what it’s like to win, he has done it several times.

“Playing with Cristiano at Real Madrid was amazing, so special. He is one of the best players in football history. He was so demanding … During the matches he wanted everyone to give the best of themselves. He motivated us, he’s a real leader.”
