Wayne Rooney has hailed Van Gaal as the best manager he’s ever worked with, while also adding that United made a mistake sacking him back in 2016.
Wayne Rooney is held in the highest of regards at Old Trafford being a club legend.
And the decorated ex-United man has opened up on his time at the club, with a rather contentious claim.
Back in 2016, the Red Devils stunned the footballing world when they decided to sack Louis Van Gaal 24 hours after he led the club to FA Cup victory.
Van Gaal was replaced with Jose Mourinho at the time and Wayne Rooney still can’t understand why the club made such a decision.
“I was devastated when Louis was sacked.” Rooney said to the Mirror.
“For me, it was an absolute joy to work with him.”
“We should have kept him for a third season. We would have been so much stronger.”
Despite playing under the likes of Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, Rooney claims he learnt the most under the tutelage of the Dutchman.
“I felt things were improving and players started to understand his vision. In those two years I learned more than under any other
“This is why I will be forever grateful to him. Not just for making me captain, but also for all the trust and belief he had in me.”
In the same vein with comments made by Rooney, Van Gaal himself also claimed he was left stunned by his dismissal.
