Rooney will not start against the U.S.

England national team’s manager Gareth Southgate has said that the veteran footballer will not be the country’s captain next week

After veteran footballer Wayne Rooney was called up to the England national team, manager Gareth Southgate says he will not be in the starting squad.

England will host the United States next week, and it will be the 120th appearance for Rooney.

“He wouldn’t wear the No 10 because he won’t start the game,” Southgate said according to Sky Sports.

VAR gives foul-mouthed Wayne Rooney a straight red card

Wayne Rooney's MLS adventure took another untimely blow when a VAR review saw the referee send him off during DC United's 2-1 defeat to New York Red Bulls.

“In terms of the captaincy, the last game he came on [as a substitute] with me, Jordan Henderson gave him the armband as soon as he ran on the pitch.”

“So I guess that will depend on the circumstances around the game and the players that are on there but I have no issue with that at all,” he added.

“As the manager, my involvement was: ‘Am I happy for him to play a part in the game?’ Yes. I’m still able to look to the future in terms of the squad I was able to pick and the things I want to see.”
