Henrikh Mkhitaryan may make a deadline day loan move to Roma.
According to reports out of Sky Sports, Mkhitaryan and Arsenal are in talks with Roma over a loan deal.
Mkhitaryan was the other half of the Alexis Sanchez swap.
While it could be said that he faired better than Sanchez, his move from Manchester to London has hardly been a revelation.
From Arsenal’s point of view, they may have come out better than United, as financially Armenian international cost them far less than the Chilean did in wages.
Either way, this will be a deal that all parties will be glad to bring an end too.
Mkhitaryan was one of Jose Mourinho’s early signings at Manchester United, in 2016. He cost the Red Devils 42 million Euros from Borussia Dortmund.
He fell out of favour with Mourinho for what is believed to be personal reasons, and was offloaded to Arsenal only 18 months after arriving.
The Sanchez-Mkhitaryan deal was a simple straight swap.
Just as Sanchez’s spell at United was brought to a pain-relieving end, so it appears will Mkhitaryan’s at Arsenal.
He has made three appearances so far this season for Unai Emery’s side. Last season saw him make 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and adding seven assists.
However, it is understood, that one of the last pieces of business Arsene Wenger did as a manager is not key to Emery’s long term plans.
Arsenal has invested heavily in their squad this summer, and feel that offloading player who is surplus to requirements is key to balancing the books.
Also, Emery himself has said, he does not want unhappy players in his squad. The Armenian does not want a bit-part role.
It is believed that squad rotation and substitutes appearances are what led to the breakdown in his relationship with Mourinho at United.
Likewise, Roma has bee bust too this summer, and are still looking at a few acquisitions.
If this transfer does go through, it will be Roma’s third loan deal from the Premier League, and Mkhitaryan would join former United teammate Chris Smalling in Rome.
