Sadio Mane admits that he would give up the Champions League winners medal if that is what would take for Senegal to win AFCON.
Senegal and Sadio Mane have one focus at the moment. To lift the African Cup of Nations for the first time in the country’s history. Over the years, Senegal have come close to lifting the title but have always faltered at some stage.
But things might be different this time around. After helping Senegal vanquish Tanzania 2-0 in their opening game in Egypt, Sadio Mane is in bullish mood.
The Lions of Teranga take on Algeria this Thursday before they face Kenya in their last group game of the tournament. Another win would be enough to secure passage to the knockout stage of the competition. And Mane says that he is going to consider winning the African Cup an even bigger moment than lifting the Champions League with Liverpool.
Sadio Mane was one of the driving force in Liverpool’s successful Champions League campaign alongside fellow Africans, Nabi Keita and Mohammad Salah.
Speaking to France Football, the talented forward says that being favourites is one thing, going all the way is another.
“It is up to us to achieve something great,” Mane told France Football .
“Of course we are one of the favourites, we cannot hide from that. But this standing is not enough to go all the way.
“Winning with my country, which has never won the Africa Cup of Nations, that would be magnificent.
“I am even ready to swap a Champions’ League to win an Africa Cup of Nations.
“The return to Dakar would be extraordinary. This is my biggest and most crazy dream.”
Indeed, Sadio Mane is already dreaming of something that has eluded the country for ever. And with such a talented squad, one cannot rule out the Lions of Teranga lifting the AFCON this time around.
