Sadio Mane is in elite company after moving level on goals with five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in the Premier League.
Sadio Mane has steadily developed into a prolific presence down the Liverpool flanks, providing the club with 81 goals and 34 assists in 170 appearances.
The Senegalese star played a key part in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side win the Champions League in 2018/19. He did so again this term in ending their 30-year drought for league glory.
The 2019/20 season was arguably the finest of his career. Despite only having a week of vacation following his exploits at AFCON in the previous summer, Mane was pivotal. He scored some decisive goals early on to help establish Liverpool’s title challenge and win the UEFA Super Cup.
The 28-year-old rarely had an off-day and is deservedly a contender for the PFA Player of the Year award.
And even after Liverpool sealed the Premier League title with several games to spare, Mane continued to make his mark by moving level with Ronaldo in the Premier League scoring charts.
The Daily Star reported that Mane’s goal in Liverpool’s final day 3-1 win over Newcastle was the 84th Premier League goal of his career; the exact same as Ronaldo.
What makes this even more intriguing is that Ronaldo took two more games (196) than Mane (194) to achieve this tally.
True, they were from different eras and very different teams but it’s still a great achievement on Mane’s behalf and shows what a player he’s become over the years.
