Sadio Mane targets league & European glory next season

A “proud” Sadio Mane wants Liverpool to go one better next season by winning the Premier League alongside the Champions League.

It was Mane’s cross that touched Moussa Sissoko’s arm in the area to award Liverpool a second-minute penalty. Mohamed Salah then put it away to put them in control before Divock Origi’s late strike sealed a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Saturday’s final.

After missing out on the Premier League title by a single point to Manchester City, the European title was a welcome award for their efforts this season.

Less than 24 hours after winning his first trophy for the Reds, however, Mane is already targetting more success next season.

“I think it’s the start of something special, like everybody mentioned, because last year we were close and this season we won it,” said Mane, according to Goal.

“So, next year [we go] for the league and Champions League. We know it will not be easy but we are Liverpool, we are strong, we will do everything and we still have a young team.

“We will keep learning and working hard to get more trophies.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid last season in Kiev. However, they bounced back stronger than ever and recorded impressive victories over the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich on route to the title.

On whether winning this season felt more satisfying after the defeat in Kiev, Mane said: “I think so.

Mauricio Pochettino: “We are waiting to see what happens” with Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur's Mauricio Pochettino says he "doesn't know" if Christian Eriksen will play again for the club. Following continued speculation between the player and...

“I think last year was not easy. It was really, really hard but that’s football.

“That makes people love football. We have learned a lot this year, so we’re just really happy.

“The lessons we learned came in many ways, in many things. We’ve got more experience and at the same time we’re used to playing this type of game. It made it easier today.”

Mane added:  “To be honest I think the dream became true.

“I don’t even know how happy I am, I could not believe until now.

“I think I’m still dreaming! But at the end of the day I won, so very happy, very proud.

“I don’t have the words to describe how happy I am. Of course, it’s one of the best [nights of my life].

“It was not easy, it was a long way, but at the end of the day we did it together so really happy and really proud.”
