Italian defender Jacopo Sala gave a detailed account of his experience going one-on-one with none other than Cristiano Ronaldo in Sampdoria’s last game of 2018
Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of the most prolific goalscorers in history and has been noted for his intelligent and fast movements across the pitch, which time and time again has proved to be problematic for defenders.
But, perhaps, one of the aspects of Ronaldo’s play that doesn’t get mentioned enough is his ability to lose and anticipate his markers, something which Sala can fully appreciate now.
The Italian played against Ronaldo on December 29 in the final Serie A game of 2018, where the Portuguese forward scored twice to hand Juventus a 2-1 win over Sampdoria.
“He is a top player, he tricked me twice,” said Sala, according to Calcio Mercato.
“The first one: he scored one goal and I could’ve done more. I watched the action on the replay and I could have forced him to kick with his weak foot”.
“The second trick was after the final whistle. I asked his shirt but he had already given it to another one of my team-mates.
“He promised, however, that he’d give it to me the next time we play one against the other”.
“During the game, he doesn’t say a word. He is just focused on the game and his performance, he impressed me”.
“I had never played more than four games in a row, I knew there were criticisms but now my performances are good. I marked Ronaldo and things are changing”.
Ronaldo will return to action in Juventus’ Coppa Italia clash with Bologna on Saturday.
