Sampdoria explains why they signed Kownacki and not Piatek

President Ferrero says his team enjoyed more the Polish talent of Kownacki when he had the chance to sign the now Genoa sensation

Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek is the current star of the Italian Lega Serie A.

The Genoa player is the most lethal footballer in the Calcio, but it could have been different.

Sampdoria had the chance to sign Piatek, and at the end signed Dawid Kownacki.

“The incredible thing is that Piatek was the understudy to Kownacki,” the Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero told Football Italia.

Claudio Ranieri has sealed a return to football management by becoming the new head coach of Serie A strugglers Sampdoria.

“We saw both of them in action and decided to sign Kownacki because he was the first choice. I hope that Piatek can keep his form up for a long time, so I’ll finally see [Genoa President Enrico] Preziosi smile.”

“I hope the Derby can bring a smile to the faces of all the citizens of Genoa,” he added.

The Polish talent of Kownacki is still under the shadow of veteran footballer Fabio Quagliarella.

“His contract runs to the end of the season, but he is in my heart and we’ll meet up after Christmas,” Ferrero added.

“In January, we’ll decide together very calmly what to do next. If he wants to stay, then he’ll stay with us. If he wants to leave, we’ll let him go.”
