Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has indicated that Cesc Fabregas may have a part to play in his plans after all
The Spanish midfielder was absent for Chelsea’s opening games of the 2017/18 campaign due to a “strange injury” that was sustained against former club Arsenal in a friendly at Dublin in August.
In Fabregas’ absence, new signing Jorginho has impressed at Chelsea with the Italian playmaker setting new passing records for English football in the process.
But, on the back of Fabregas’ superb displays against PAOK and Liverpool, Sarri has suggested that the 31-year-old may be able to challenge Jorginho for a starting spot at Chelsea.
“Yes, I think so. I think very well in the last 30 minutes in Greece and very well for 90 minutes in Liverpool,” said Sarri in a press conference, ahead of Chelsea’ Europa League game against Videoton.
“He has to improve the physical condition of course but I think that he is a great option in this position. Not changing his style too much because Cesc is very good in moving the ball like Jorginho so we don’t need to change the way of football with Fabregas.”
Fabregas, whose contract expires in the summer, has managed 21 goals and 55 assists in 185 games for Chelsea across all competitions since arriving from Barcelona in 2014.
