Lionel Scaloni is hoping Lionel Messi will play for Argentina beyond the next summers 2020 Copa America.

Lionel Messi has never won a major trophy with the Argentine national team.

Perhaps the only thing missing from his amazing collection of winners medals, a Copa America title and a World Cup title.

In fact, it has been a long baron spell for the Argentines, no Copa since 1993 and no World Cup since 1986.

The two Lionel’s though is planning to change that starting this summer.

Scaloni and Messi are on the hunt for silverware.

In an interview reported by Goal, Scaloni is hungry for success, for the country, not just himself or Messi.

He said:

“Argentina needs the title, more than just him.”

“Hopefully, don’t promise anything, but we’ll give the maximum to reach the final.”

Asked if Messi would retire after this summer, he is optimistic he will play on.

He added:

“I don’t know if it will be the last. Hopefully not.” the Argentina coach told reporters.

A third-place finish and Messi sent off was how it ended in the last Copa America.

They will be hoping for better fortunes this time around especially with home-field advantage, as Argentina and Colombia are co-hosts.
