Fulham began their Championship Playoff fixture against Brentford with Mitrovic on the bench and Parker has explained his rationale for the decision.
The Cottagers started the game without the prolific Serbian but his impact from the bench helped them get over the line. Mitrovic did not get on the scoreboard but provided the assist for Bryan’s second goal.
Mitrovic won the Championship Golden Boot with 26 goals to his name but was troubled by a niggling hamstring injury.
Scott Parker explained his rationale for dropping the Serbian for the crunch encounter. However, it was not due to fitness reasons but tactical ones.
“He has had two days of training and looked very good and well but I have had to make a decision tonight on how I see the game going,” Parker was quoted by Football London.
“The game could go longer than the 90 minutes and that is what we are in.”
“I have had to make a decision and the decision I have made it to obviously put him on the bench.”
Mitrovic was in a foul mood with the bench role and let out his anger on Brentford players.
The 1-2 win at Wembley marks Fulham’s swift return to English top-flight football. They join Leeds United and West Brom as the clubs promoted to the Premier League.
