Fabio Capello was pleased with Real Madrid’s La Liga triumph and hailed Karim Benzema for his decisive influence for the Spanish giants.
Fabio Capello knows a thing or two about winning. Especially La Liga.
The Italian tactician directed proceedings from the sidelines twice and brought La Liga to the Real Madrid trophy cabinet.
Capello was pleased with the result of the 2019/20 campaign, stating that Madrid was ‘deservedly’ the winners of La Liga.
The former England manager stated that Real Madrid was the best team in Spanish top flight, and rightfully ended Barcelona’s dominant reign.
“Deservedly so. They played the best football in the division, scored goals and didn’t concede. Madrid has ended Barcelona’s monopoly and has taken advantage of their slump,” Capello told Roberto Gomez in an interview for Marca.
“But we have to be clear – Madrid won the title on their own merits, not because of others’ mistakes.”
Karim Benzema was also singled out for his remarkable season. Capello stated that it was the Frenchman’s most influential season since he joined from Olympique Lyon 11-years ago.
“[He’s been] sensational. He’s become a benchmark for Madrid and he’s undoubtedly the best.”
“He has taken on responsibility that he didn’t have when he played with Cristiano Ronaldo, he has a nose for goal and he’s shown it. He scored decisive goals and I think it’s the best season since he signed.”
Real Madrid are on a short break before regrouping for their Champions League Round of 16 second leg fixture against Manchester City.
Los Blancos are down after losing the home leg 2-1 and need to overturn the deficit at the Etihad Stadium.
